An Oxfordshire business celebrated an industry award after going against the grain to hire people at a disadvantage in finding work.
Abingdon-based Oxford Wood Recycling saw off three other finalists to scoop the Social Responsibility Award at the Vale 4 Business Awards during a ceremony on May 18.
The not-for-profit organisation’s social mission is to employ people at a disadvantage in finding work and limit wood waste.
CEO Richard Snow said: “We are constantly thinking of new things to do with recycled wood and taking inspiration from our customers’ projects and recently developed our own furniture collection from reclaimed wood.
“We have a new showroom space designed to provide a vision of how reclaimed wood with all its quirky irregularities and charm can enhance modern living and encourage people to get excited about making things.”
Judge Suzannah Davies, from sponsors Bluestream Recruitment, said Oxford Wood Recycling stood out for its “proven track record in successfully achieving its social mission”.
“They have demonstrated resilience, determination and are continuously evolving their own ‘social goals’ to encompass and support even more people here in Oxfordshire,” she said.
The company was founded in 2005 and currently employs 20 people and work is with more than 10 volunteers.
