Business teacher jailed for dealing drugs to students

A TEACHER has been jailed for 15 months after she was caught dealing drugs to pupils at a north Oxfordshire school.

Rachel Ryan, 41, of Fford Bryngwyn, Gorseinon, Swansea, formerly of Banbury, admitted three counts of supplying class C drugs, three counts of importing a class C drug with intent to evade a prohibition/restriction, and one count of possessing a class A drug – heroin.

She was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on November 24.

Police said Ryan had been working at a school in Banbury, as head of business studies, at the time of the offences. The school was not named.

An investigation revealed she had been dealing Valium and other class C drugs to students.

She was caught after another teacher spotted a pupil texting in class and confiscated the phone.

Ryan used her knowledge as head of business studies in her role as drug dealer… in one of her texts she offered a discounted price if a user purchased more than 100 tablets

Further checks revealed the student had been texting Ryan.

When the school checked other messages it contacted police over concerns they related to drugs.

Ryan was suspended by the school and a police investigation launched.

Police said Ryan was selling Valium to pupils and had ordered other class C drugs to be delivered to her address in Banbury.

When she was arrested in June last year police also found a quantity of heroin in her possession.

The total amount of drugs seized had a street value of about £1,900.

Detective Constable Bryan Groves, of Oxford Force CID, said Ryan had “abused” the trust placed in her as a teacher.

He said: “Rachel Ryan used her knowledge gained as the head of business studies in her role as a drug dealer.

“This was seen in one of her text messages where she offered a discounted price if a drug user purchased more than 100 tablets.

“Rachel Ryan had trust placed in her as a teacher. She had responsibilities and should have been someone for her students to look up to.

“She abused that trust and has let her students down.”
