Oxford United Women were given a footballing lesson by a slick Manchester City Women side who ran out 6-0 winners in the FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup tie last week.
Setting out to stifle and frustrate their opponents the U’s proved themselves capable of doing just that.
That was until just before half time when a clumsy challenge in the box gave the WSL 1 powerhouse the opportunity to take the lead.
Issy Christiansen made no mistake in converting the spot kick and, straight from the restart, Georgia Stanway capitalised on loose possession to drive the ball home and give City a 2-0 half time lead.
Oxford’s best attacking opportunity came through an Ellie Noble half-chance, sending a long-range shot just wide after a surging run.
In the second half City, who boast England internationals Steph Houghton, Jill Scott and Nikita Parris in their team, pulled away as United’s part-timers tired against their superior opponents.
Goals from Stanway, Claire Emslie, and two from Jen Beattie made the final scoreline 6-0 as the visitors finished their chances ruthlessly.
The U’s, who have lost both their Continental Tyres Cup matches, are back in league action when they travel to Millwall Lionesses on Sunday.
