Flying the flag in honour

A flag was hoisted above Witney Town Hall to honour Second World War navy casualties on Friday.

Merchant Navy Day marks September 3, 1939 when vessel SS Arthenia was torpedoed, leading to the loss of 128 lives.

Mayor Chris Woodward attended a ceremony with deputy mayor Cllr Brenda Churchill, a former Wren and Cllr Howard Chirgwin, a former member of the Merchant Navy, where the Red Ensign was raised by cadets from TS Euryalus to honour the victims.

Since 2000, the day has honoured those who kept the ‘island nation’ afloat during both world wars.
